ELEGANT PASSAGE: MURALS FOR CO-LIVING
4 FLOORS OF muralS & COLOUR FOR UKO APARTMENTS ERSKINEVILLE
The ‘ELEGANT PASSAGE’ murals weave together four local ‘ingredients’; the brick arches of the 1884 railway underbridge, the colours of the Port Jackson fig tree visible from the end of the corridor, and the Welcome Swallow, a common native bird whose balletic and dainty flight recalls patron of the adjacent Kirsova Playground, gifted to the city by ballerina Helene Kirsova.
It’s a reminder of place (where am I standing right now?) and a spatial marker that seeks to make the movement of people through the apartment corridors more enjoyable and socially engaging. At each floor, the dominant background colour changes, from aubergine, to terracotta, to fig tree green and finally to blue.
It is my wish that these murals are a welcome sight at each departure and arrival, an orientation device, and a point of connection between neighbours.
